What is Convergent WorshipConvergent Worship is simply defined by the 2 words.
ConvergentEncarta defines converge as "to reach the same point coming from different directions, to become gradually less different and eventually the same, and to gather or meet at the same destination". It continues as it defines convergence as "a coming together from different directions, especially a uniting or merging of groups or tendencies that were originally opposed or very different." (Encarta® World English Dictionary © 1999 )
In current culture and society, every issue is polarized. You are either on one side or the other, with each opposing view being wrong. Within the body of Christ it is no different. Sadly the arts and especially music have been found in the crosshairs of disagreement for as long as the history of the church. Convergent is the melding of many histories, styles, and genres, and presents them together as one offering of worship to God in a relevant way that speaks to the needs of the people.
WorshipThe term worship is used in a variety of ways but is mostly used out of context. Worship is not singing, praying, a church service, a time period, a style, or anything we do. Those are just avenues in which worship is expressed.
"Worship is the occupation of the soul with God Himself and does not include prayer for needs and thanksgiving for blessings" (Wycliffe Bible Dictionary) "Worship or worth-ship originally referred to the action of expressing homage to God because He is worthy of it. It covers such activities as adoration, thanksgiving, prayers of all kinds, the offering of sacrifices, and the making of vows (commitments). Nowadays, however, "worship" is used for any kind of interaction between God and His people. It therefore includes not only the human approach to God but also the communication of God with His people. Such activity is the formal expression of spiritual attitudes which should characterize God's people at all times (Rom. 12:1). The term "worship" is misunderstood if it gives the impression that the major element is what human beings do or offer to God. (Worship) is primarily concerned about what God does for His people. Worship is the human response to a gracious God". (New Bible Dictionary)
Worship is a way of life; a moment-by-moment living to honor Christ in response to the work that He has and is doing in our hearts. Responding to God and worshiping Him through earthly and spiritual pathways such as music, prayers, serving, giving, art, helping a needy person, being kind to the cashier at Wal-Mart. Those are just a few of the ways that worship can represent itself here on earth. The highest act of worship is found in Romans 12:1...
1-2 So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life-your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life-and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. (MSG)
Convergent Worship strives to break down the barriers that have been created over time that divide the church into expressions such as traditional, contemporary, modern, post-modern, emergent, etc. The church should not be defined by a certain style but be who Christ has called it to be. Convergent Worship is a movement to bring people back into the biblical foundations that are intended for the church to live by.
Conflict??So you have conflict on your team or at your church? Welcome to the wonderful world of creative arts ministry!
Why Convergent? It seems that our society tries to place a label on everything and then put those labels into a certain box with idealistic parameters.
